Greetings fellow Doebotz!  I am very pleased to introduce an extremely talented writer and hip-hop artist by the name of "Genesis". I can remember earlier this year I was told about this guy named Genesis by a good friend of mine named Brenner Vasquez of INDI:VSBL Media. Brenner was explaining how his brother Ivan had been working with Genesis, and that he was making some real noise on the radio stations in Va. Beach, Va. It wasn't until Brenner teamed up with his brother Ivan & Genesis to shoot his music video for "I Just Want To Be A Writer (Note To Pharrell)" that I knew what was really going on. I can honestly say it has been a minute since I've heard an artist that I thought was a perfect representation of Hip-Hop, not that sh*t that plays over and over on your local radio stations day in & day out. Shortly after listening to the entire Grey Skies Mixtape, I took it upon myself to reach out to Genesis and express my gratitude for his verbal expressions over beats and to also pitch a non-exclusive sponsorship opportunity, which I am happy to say he accepted. Mark my words, you will be hearing his name a lot more in the near future! Doebotz is honored to work with Genesis, and we hope that you enjoy this brief interview inside the world of Russell McGee, Jr aka Genesis...

Check out Grey Skies!!!

DBZ: So Genesis, where are you from originally & where do you reside now?

Genesis: I’m from Virginia Beach, Va but reside in Chattanooga, Tn right now.

DBZ: When & how did you become interested in music?

Genesis: Around middle school really…I always refer back to this poem by T.S. Elliot, I forget the name of it now (laugh), I think its The Love Song of J Alfred Prufrock ~ or Song of J Alfred Prufrock something close to this. The lyrical wit and metaphors he used to explain this small fraction of time, the love, and his feelings with this girl was written in a way I’ve never heard. This planted the seed for me to write/rap.

DBZ: Who are some of your influences? (not only confined to music)

Genesis: Besides my spiritual influences, I’d have to say Nat King Cole, Radiohead, Getz/Gilberto, my parents of course…not to get too mushy, (laugh), but I really feel like I’ve had the best parents growing up and there still the best in my book.

DBZ: What are some of your accomplishments thus far? Small or large.

Genesis: I can tell you the one I’m most proud of thus far....it would definitely be the team I’ve built around me. Kristoff my manager and Ivan my agent are the key components. Then we have so much support that branches from this…like Maxwell, this #greykid movement, Brenner, Miles Beyond, James Wood, Chris & Lu with Kid Saturn and many other clothing labels such as your-self. This is not to mention the major support/connects that come from me being under Kristoff’s Rebel Socialite umbrella. We’re truly operating like a Business…everyone is in there own lane, everyone playing there own parts, everyone’s happy. An old man summed up the importance of having a team, in ten words…he said, Individually, we are one drop. Together, we are an ocean.. The awards I’ve won with my poetry, the amazing artist I’ve ghost written for, shows I’ve been on, and so forth would all have been tripled, had I a team from the beginning.

DBZ: What projects are you working on now or have in the pipeline?

Genesis: Well right now we have a show on www.CreativeControl.tv that should be airing toward the end of the year. This will give people an idea of who I am…as a person, a musician, and a writer/artist. I’m also in the studio working on my first EP which should drop early next year, maybe spring. Should have an Official music video shot by legends Coodie & Chike drop sometime this year as well…uhmm, few other things developing with Chris & Lu at Kid Saturn with the #greyKid movement…(laughing) I love being a #greyKid.

DBZ: What is your ultimate goal you wish to reach?

Genesis: My ultimate goal with music would just be trying to keep it organic…keep it #greyKid I guess. You know a good friend of mine, Mike G., is always helping me to realize this by his questioning. Almost every week he’ll ask, “…would you still be doing this music if you never got paid for it?” My answer always being “yes”...this keeps music real to me. When you hear an artist or watch a painter, that does his craft and as his music is stolen, or his paintings overlooked…he smiles. Why? Because he would be doing the same music/paintings whether they were for sell or not. Here’s a #greyKid thought: Let the money be a plus…an extra thank you from everyone that enjoys your work.

Stay up to speed on everything Genesis!!!
